The upcoming historical drama “Uinyeo Dae Jang Geum” is confirmed to be a distinct production from the 2003 MBC drama “Jewel in the Palace,” also known as “Dae Jang Geum.” (also known as “Dae Jang Geum”).
Fantagio clarified on February 5 that “Uinyeo Dae Jang Geum” is indeed an entirely separate project from “Jewel in the Palace.” It is a new fictional interpretation based on the historical figure Dae Jang Geum and her story, and it does not involve the return of characters from the previous drama. They emphasized that the project is still in the developmental stage after signing with the writer team, and no final decisions have been made yet.
Earlier in January, Fantagio announced their plans to commence filming for “Uinyeo Dae Jang Geum” in October. Alongside this announcement came the casting news of actress Lee Young Ae, known for her role as the titular character in “Jewel in the Palace.” “Uinyeo Dae Jang Geum” is set to explore the life of Jang Geum following her transition into a uinyeo, or female physician.
In February, scriptwriter Kim Young Hyun, who is the original creator of “Jewel in the Palace,” clarified that she has no involvement in Fantagio’s production of “Uinyeo Dae Jang Geum.” Neither she nor the original drama’s production team had prior knowledge of the project, and they emphasized that “Uinyeo Dae Jang Geum” is completely unrelated to “Jewel in the Palace” in terms of its setting, characters, and storyline.
